Yet on a Sunday game, it was Contreras’s actions that set off the baseball veteran Pham, leading to a situation reminiscent of a professional wrestler’s fiery speech during a post-game media interaction, following another defeat for the White Sox at the hands of the Brewers.
In a pivotal moment in the top of the eighth inning, with the White Sox trailing 4-3, Pham dashed towards home plate in an attempt to even the score. However, Contreras tagged him out well in advance, celebrating the play vivaciously on his way back to the dugout.
Pham, obviously irate, hurled verbal jabs at Contreras, which led to an intervention from the umpire and teammates who had to hold him back. While no further incidents occurred on the field, Pham’s post-game comments showed he was still simmering.
“I’m out at home by a mile and heading to the dugout when I hear this tough guy going all ‘hoo-rah’ on me,” Pham told reporters. “I don’t start things, but I’m always ready to finish them. That’s why I train in different fighting disciplines during the offseason. I’m prepared to f–k somebody up if necessary.”
“Take it for what you will,” Pham concluded before exiting the interview area.
Despite the fiery encounter, the altercation had no bearing on the game’s conclusion, which saw the White Sox slump to a 6-3 loss to the Brewers, plummeting their season record to 15-45.
Completing their sweep of the White Sox, Contreras remained unbothered by Pham’s heated reaction.
“I wasn’t really paying attention to what he had to say,” Contreras remarked to the press, plainly more engaged with the excitement of the defensive play than the subsequent altercation.
Recalling a previous incident, Pham had a notorious confrontation with Pederson back in 2022 during a pre-game batting practice due to disagreement that stemmed from a fantasy football league chat.
