Chicago police warn of restaurant thefts targeting downtown diners
Chicago police are warning diners about a theft scheme targeting wallets, purses and phones at downtown restaurants and coffee shops. Chicago police have issued a warning to diners at restaurants and coffee shops in downtown Chicago following a series of daytime thefts. At least eight related thefts were reported in October in the Loop, West Loop and Near South Side. The suspects posed as charity fundraisers and then placed a flyer or newspaper over victim’s wallet, purse, or cellphone before walking away. In some cases, debit or credit cards were used at nearby department stores. The victims were identified as Black men between 17 and 25 years old wearing dark clothing and face coverings. Police are asking restaurant owners and customers to keep valuables out of reach and alert for suspicious people or vehicles nearby.
