Chicago Department of Public Health – BGA Policy 2027 Budget Snapshot
The city’s public health department provides a wide range of services across the city, including infectious disease prevention, mental health services, and food sanitation and nutrition programs. As a heavily The Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) experienced a significant increase in funding during the COVID-19 pandemic, with allocations more than quadrupled from 2020-2022, driven primarily by federal grants. The current proposal would decrease department's appropriations by 0.5% from the previous year. Prior to the pandemic period, CDPH appropriations grew at an average rate of 2.3%, or 1.1% when adjusted for inflation through 2025. The department's budget has declined since its high point in 2022. The proposed 2027 budget would increase budgeted headcount by 3.4% from 2022-2025, the first increase since 2024.
