Obama Explains His Ominous ‘Death Star’ in Chicago
And it still looks as ominous and menacing as it did before he explained it. Barack Obama's new "presidential center" in Chicago, set to open next year, has been compared to an urban prison or fortress and has been described as ominous and forbidding. The obelisk-like structure with almost no windows suggests that it is intended to be a welcoming and inviting center for visitors, presenting an overview of the Obama presidency. The building's design has been likened to the ‘Death Star’ on social media and some locals have described it as a ‘concrete tomb’ and a “monstrosity.” However, the Obama Foundation CEO, Valerie Jarrett, defended the building, stating that it was intended to represent the transformative era of Obama's presidency and represents a "four hands coming together to show the importance of collective action" rather than expressing some socialist ideal. Despite these criticisms, the former president's administration has admitted that the design of the building is just the way the former administration wants it to be.
