Giant puppets, a fire-breathing dragon and dozens of dancers will fuel Chicago’s Arts in the Dark parade this weekend

Organizer Mark Kelly said the night of spooky festivities shows parading is an art form: “It's about as close as you're going to come to Mardi Gras in Chicago. It's not Mardi Gras, but it sort of captures that.” The annual Arts in the Dark parade, now in its 12th year, is set to take place on Columbus Drive in Chicago. The event's co-founder and artistic director, Mark Kelly, described it as "about as close as Mardi Gras in Chicago" and as a celebration of parading as an art form. The roughly 100 groups participating include high school marching bands, an all-women lowrider car club, a 60-foot glow worm, circus acts and ballet folklórico dancers. This year's parade will move east to accommodate the crowd of around 100,000 people. The parade's theme is a blend of 1970s meets Soul Train meets with vampires and monsters.
