Now in his second year with the club, which is performing as the worst team in Major League Baseball, speculation is rampant that Grifol’s departure is a matter of “when” not “if,” as detailed by The Athletic.
Heading into a game against their city rivals, the Cubs, the White Sox have suffered a losing streak of 12 straight.
Insider Ken Rosenthal of MLB hints, “All of the pieces are in place for a managerial change,” adding the only lingering question is the timing.
Amid such dismal performance, the spotlight turns to Grifol, who is often the fall guy for such underachievement, rather than the roster of players themselves.
Since his tenure began, the White Sox have managed a win-loss record of 76-147, showing only a 34.1 percent win rate.
Grifol also raised eyebrows last month when he made pronouncedly critical comments about his team’s lackluster performance and choosing not to retract his statement the next day.
One team member confided to The Athletic that Grifol committed a faux pas by publicly sharing thoughts that had been previously confined to a team meeting.
Another component potentially influencing Grifol’s precarious situation is that he wasn’t a choice of the current executive team.
Grifol was brought on by the former general manager Rick Hahn to succeed Tony La Russa in November 2022. Yet Hahn was dismissed before the season’s end.
Chris Getz, who was promoted to fill Hahn’s role, might seek to appoint his own choice of manager.
It is suggested that Getz could make a definitive call on Grifol’s future with the franchise, especially with the potential mid-season call-up of prospects.
Getz will have to decide if Grifol can provide a nurturing environment for the emerging talents or if a new start would be more beneficial in line with their arrival.
However, it is also to be noted that Grifol had little to no say in the assembling of the team’s current roster, which was largely a product of Getz and Hahn’s decision-making.
At the end of the day, the decision rests in the hands of Jerry Reinsdorf, the team owner, known for his unpredictable nature.
Rosenthal put it succinctly: “Reinsdorf operates according to his own whims, no one else’s.”
