Why is the air quality bad in Chicago today? What pollutants are in the air
While the conditions and temperatures will be mild, the air quality issues will persist over the weekend. Some parts of the Chicago area experienced poor air quality early Friday morning, ranking "unhealthy for sensitive groups" or level three of six on AirNow.gov's air quality scale. These areas included parts of Cook County, DuPage County, Tinley Park, Elmhurst, Downers Grove, York, Oak Lawn, Frankfort and Chicago Heights. The National Weather Service attributes these poor conditions to stagnant air, a major building of air pollution in the atmosphere. A dense fog advisory was also in effect for parts of Chicago, including Lake County in Illinois and Kenosha County in Wisconsin. The weekend forecast for the Chicago is expected to remain sunny and mild, with above-average temperatures in the low 70s but cooler near the lake.
