Chicago police awards honor fallen hero, wounded officers and lives saved by bulletproof vests
From officers who survived gunfire to a fallen hero remembered by his wife, Chicago’s Valor Awards celebrated the courage, sacrifice and compassion behind the badge. The Chicago Police Memorial Foundation held its Valor Awards to honor officers who have taken a bullet in public safety, including one who died in a shooting. The award was given to Officer John Bartholomew, a 10-year department veteran who died following a shooting at Swedish Covenant Hospital. Officer Nelson Crespo, who was seriously wounded in the shooting, was also honored. The foundation has given nearly 16,000 bulletproof vests to police officers due to the leadership of former Superintendent Phil Cline. The new executive director, Arthur Hannus, acknowledged the courage and compassion displayed by police officers in the city.
