Recycled gold has not solved jewellery’s sourcing problem, warns Susan Wheeler

Susan Wheeler warns recycled gold can mask illicit supply chains as the Chicago Responsible Jewelry Conference opens for its tenth year. Jeweller Susan Wheeler, founder of the Chicago Responsible Jewelry Conference, has warned that recycled gold can still be found in recycled supply chains. This comes as the 10th annual Chicago Responsibility Jewelry conference opens in downtown Chicago, bringing together miners, jewellers, retailers, suppliers, NGOs, policymakers and academics to discuss environmental and human-rights risks across the jewellery supply chain. The conference will also address the role of recycled gold in funding conflict in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, the environmental impact of mercury use, and the limitations of recycled sourcing. Wheeler argues that gold connected to conflict can be traded into streams later presented to buyers, which can reveal its origin. She also believes traceable mined material can deliver greater benefits than sourcing models that remove the mine and its communities from the story.
